BACKSTORY: My grandmother was the one who introduced us to the Brandywine area; even though she lived in San Diego, she was aware of the Wyeth family of painters and the Brandywine River Museum. Every year, the family made at least one trip to this incredible gallery, which was my first experience with adaptive reuse of a building. Originally a grist mill from the 19th century, it was perfectly repurposed to house paintings from every generation of the Wyeths. The Christmas exhibit with trees with all natural ornaments in the lobby to the model train room were childhood favorites, and continue to be a joy when I return to the area.
